December Birthstones

Blue topaz, Turquoise , Zircon

Zircon - Stone of Virtue

Zircon - ancient in Australia  is the oldest mineral on earth 4.4 billion years old.

Zircon sometimes contains Uranium, irradiating itself and changing its properties

when heat treated can become highly refractive

yellow, brown, red, green. blue - heat treatment process - cooks off radium activity

Very sparkly - high luster

In fact, it is much rarer than diamonds but is considerably less valuable. Zircon comes closer to resembling diamonds than any other natural gem. Its superior luster and intense fire give it a real sparkle that is comparable to a diamond.

Moh’s 6-7.5

History & Lore

Zircon’s name means imitation - Arabic word Zarkun, meaning cinnabar or vermillion. Or Persian Zargun - gold colored

In the middle ages, Zircon was thought to induce sound sleep, drive away evil spirits and promote rights and wisdom.

Blue Zircon favorite during Victorian times - sparkly gemstones were very fashionable (1880’s) Tiffany’s fames buyer George Kunz - was notable Zircon advocate. He once proposed the name starlet to promote the gems fiery nature. The name never caught on

Blue Topaz - Lucky Stone

Blue topaz is hardly ever natural. It is almost always caused by treatment. Topaz is allochromatic, which means that its color is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure.

The various techniques in use today to alter colorless topaz to produce brown, pink, and most commonly, blue stones are discussed. Special attention is given to the three irradiation sources -gamma rays, high-energy electrons, and neutrons - used to convert the colorless stones to hues in the yellow to brown range and the subsequent heat treatment required in most cases to turn the irradiated stones blue. The blue color produced by irradiation and subsequent heat treatment is stable to light. Currently, no routine gemological tests are available that can definitively determine whether the color of the topaz is natural or the result of treatment.
