August 6, 1945 Hiroshima (78 Years ago)

Were you alive when this happened? Do you remember? How did it affect you?

Like most strategic bombing during World War II, the aim of the air offensive against Japan was to destroy the enemy's war industries, kill or disable civilian employees of these industries, and undermine civilian morale.

0245 - the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay lift off the Tinian with the uranium bomb ‘Little Boy’ aboard. The Enola Gay is accompanied by The Great Artiste & Necessary Evil

0320 Little Boy is armed

0730 Enola Gay Captain Paul Tibbets announces to the crew - We are carrying the world’s first atomic bomb.

0809 Air raid sirens begin in Hiroshima

0912 Enola Gay bombardier Thomas Ferebee takes control of the aircraft as the bombing run begins.

0914:17 Hiroshima Aloi Bridge, the target point, comes into view. A 60 second timer commences.

0914:17 Hiroshima Aloi Bridge, the target point, comes into view. A 60 - second timer commences

0915:15 (8.15 am) Hiroshima Captain Ferebee announces ‘Bomb Away’. as Little Boy is released from 31,000 ft

916:02 (8:16:02 am) Hiroshima after falling from the Enola Gay for 43 seconds, the Little Boy atomic bomb detonates 1,968 ft above Hiroshima, 550ft from the Aloi Bridge, Nuclear fission begins in 0.15 microseconds.

9:16:03 (8:16:03) in Hiroshima, one second after detonators. The fireball reaches maximum size, 900 ft in diameter. The mushroom cloud begins to form. As temperatures on the ground reach 7,000 degrees fahrenheit buildings melt and fuse together, human and animal tissue is vaporized. The blast wave travels as 984 miles per hour in all directions, demolishing over 2/3 of Hiroshima buildings in a massive, expanding firestorm. Eighty thousand people are instantly killed or grievously wounded. Over 100,000 more will die from the bomb’s effects in the coming months.

1055 The U.S. intercepts a Japanese message ‘a violent, large special-type bomb, giving the appearance of magnesium.’

1458 The Enola Gay lands at Tinian. The mission has lasted twelve hours

1500 Tokyo news agencies report an attack in Hiroshima. Very few details are given.

The Peace Memorial was one of the monuments built at Hiroshima in 1952. The concrete, saddle - shaped monument covers a cenotaph holding the names of all of the people killed by the first atomic bomb. Built in Shinto style, its arched  shape represents a shelter for the souls of the victims. The cenotaph carries the epitaph , ‘Rest in Peace, for the error shall not be repeated.’  Through the monument, you see the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome. The flame has burned continuously since it was lit in 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear bombs are destroyed and the planet is free of nuclear annihilation.

A-bomb Dome - The bomb exploded not upon impact with the ground, but rather as intended at a point around 200m (around 650 feet) above the city. The corresponding point on the ground is no more than around 100 meters (about 330 feet) from where that still-standing, but very bombed out building still stands today.

The Twin Towers Plaza -

Two of the largest fountains in the world sit on the footprint of the twin towers, water falls into the basin 30 feet below. Around the rim of the fountain runs a bronze plaque inscribed with the names of those who died in New York, at the Pentagon, pn Flight 93 in Pennsylvania and also at the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. It is intended the fountains will run eternally in remembrance of the people who passed from this disastrous day!

The names are grouped according to friendship and ‘adjacency requests’ so that co workers are memorialized together . Two brothers, firefighter John T. Vigiano II and police officer Joseph Vincent Vigiano, both died on 9/11. On the memorial, John’s name appears at the end of his unit. Next to it, Joseph’s name begins a list of the men in his unit. Two brothers names are forever linked. Some of the connections are particularly poignant. All the members of the one family are placed together, despite their mismatched surnames, including the tragedy’s youngest victim, two and a half year old Christina Hanson.
